Step 1 — Complete your continuing education first
CE is a prerequisite: TDLR won't issue the renewal until your hours are on file. Standard requirement is 4 hours of TDLR-approved CE per two-year period — 1 hour of sanitation, 1 hour of human trafficking prevention, and 2 hours of approved barbering/cosmetology topics such as Texas law and rules.
Held your cosmetology license 15 years or more? You qualify for the reduced requirement: 2 hours (1 hour sanitation + 1 hour human trafficking prevention).
Your hours must be completed within the two-year period immediately preceding your renewal date, and your CE provider — not you — reports them to TDLR electronically. We report within 24 hours of completion; TDLR allows providers up to 7 days.
Step 2 — Renew online at TDLR
Renew through TDLR's online licensing system (linked from the TDLR barbering and cosmetology renewal page). TDLR mails a renewal notice about 30 days before your expiration date, but not receiving it doesn't excuse a late renewal — put your expiration date in your phone now.

Step 3 — Pay the renewal fee
The on-time renewal fee for a cosmetology operator (and specialty practitioner licenses) is $50. Renew late and it climbs: roughly $75 for a recent lapse and $100 for longer, with TDLR's system calculating the exact amount.
What if my license already expired?

Common renewal mistakes
- Waiting on CE until renewal week — do the course early; it's the only step with real seat time (200 minutes for 4 hours)
- Taking a non-approved course — only TDLR-approved providers count (we're Provider #2491)
- Assuming old CE hours carry over — hours must fall within the 2 years preceding your renewal date
- Letting specialty licenses lapse — estheticians, manicurists, and other specialty licenses follow the same renewal rule
