The 15-year rule, explained
TDLR reduces the continuing education requirement for experienced license holders. If you have held your Texas cosmetology license for 15 or more years, you may renew with 2 hours of CE — 1 hour of sanitation and 1 hour of human trafficking prevention — instead of the standard 4 hours.
Your years licensed are measured against TDLR's records. When you register, we look up your license number and confirm you qualify before you pay, so you never buy the wrong course. If you're under 15 years, you'll need the 4-hour course instead.
What's in the 2-hour course
Two required topics, and only those two:
- Sanitation and infection control (1 CE hour) — current Texas disinfection and salon safety rules
- Human trafficking prevention (1 CE hour) — the awareness training every Texas license holder must complete
Done in one sitting, reported within 24 hours
Total seat time is 100 minutes (a TDLR CE hour is 50 minutes). The course is audio-based and self-paced on any device — most students finish in a single sitting.
Your certificate is emailed the moment you finish, and we report your hours electronically to TDLR within 24 hours.
